Thijs Blad, CEO/CTO
My passion is to leverage technology from the high-tech sector to create innovative solutions that drive sustainability forward. During my PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering at TU Delft, my research focused on kinetic energy harvesting—transforming everyday mechanical vibrations into electrical energy to sustainably power wireless devices, with the potential to eliminate the environmental impact of billions of disposable batteries. The research focused on the design of compliant mechanisms and integration of piezoelectric transducers and was concluded by developing and demonstrating a functional MEMS prototype, showcasing the real-world applicability and potential of this technology.
In 2022, I founded MEMSYS out of a profound belief in the potential of kinetic energy harvesting technology beyond academic publications. At MEMSYS, I lead a passionate and skilled team committed to unlocking renewable, reliable, and durable energy solutions for the rapidly expanding Industrial Internet of Things (I-IoT) market, projected to exceed 10 billion devices by 2030. I’m convinced that deep-tech startups are the perfect way to bridge the critical gap between academic research and real-world application, pushing beyond traditional university research boundaries to ensure this technologies can mature and reach commercial viability.
As an engineer, I embrace a hands-on, iterative approach—valuing intuition and practical experimentation as vital complements to rigorous analysis. I’m proud to have directly supervised over 20 M.Sc. thesis projects on energy harvesting up to today, and hope to be able to inspire more students and engineers over the next years. Beyond my professional pursuits, I enjoy outdoor activities such as running and hiking. I strongly believe that the pursuit of innovation should be approached as an adventure —embracing challenges, discovering unexpected paths, and continuously moving forward.
